Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV)
The Non-Lucrative Visa is for non EU nationals who want to live in Spain without working. You fund your stay through savings, investments, pension, or passive income. No job required, no employer letter, no minimum salary from remote work. You apply at the Spanish consulate in your home country, receive a one year visa, and convert it to a residence permit (TIE) after arrival.
We show you exactly what to book, what to bring, and what to fill in.

Who it is for
The Non-Lucrative Visa, governed by Article 45.2.b of the Real Decreto 557/2011, is designed for non EU nationals who want to live in Spain without engaging in any professional or economic activity. It is the go to visa for early retirees, financially independent individuals, people living on investment income, property income, or a foreign pension, and anyone who wants to enjoy life in Spain without a job or a business.
The key rule is simple: you cannot work. Not as an employee, not as a freelancer, not remotely. The NLV is a pure residency permit. You fund your stay through your own means, and Spain does not ask how you earned the money, only that you have enough. The financial threshold is approximately 400% of the IPREM (Indicador Público de Renta de Efectos Múltiples), which comes to approximately 2,400 euro per month or 28,800 euro per year for the primary applicant. Additional family members increase the threshold.
After the initial one year visa, you renew for two year periods. After five years of continuous legal residence, you qualify for permanent residency. At that point, the work restriction lifts: permanent residents can work in Spain without limitations.
What you get
Our module walks you through the entire NLV application from your home country. You learn exactly which documents to gather, how to apostille and translate them, and how to fill out every field of the Solicitud Nacional de Visado. We cover the financial proof in detail: how much you need in your bank account, how to present pension income, investment statements, or property rental income, and which formats the consulate actually accepts.
After your visa is approved and you arrive in Spain, the module continues with the post arrival roadmap: empadronamiento, TIE application at the Policía Nacional (converting your one year visa into a biometric residence card within 30 days), Seguridad Social registration, and the renewal process for the first two year extension. It is the same checklist a Spanish gestor would use, in your own language, available the moment you need it.
