NIE Number Spain: Get Your Tax ID Right the First Time (2026)

The NIE number is the first thing you need when moving to Spain. Find out who needs one, which form to use, and how to avoid the most common mistakes.

The NIE number is a single 8-digit reference, and almost nothing in Spain happens without it. Property purchases, bank accounts, rental contracts, tax filings, healthcare registration: every one of these will ask for your NIE before anything else. Getting it wrong, or booking the wrong appointment, costs weeks. This page explains exactly what the NIE number is, who needs one, and what the process involves.

What is the NIE Number?

The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is Spain's tax identification number for foreign nationals. It is assigned to you permanently and appears on every official document you will deal with in Spain.

The NIE number is not a residency permit. It does not give you the right to live in Spain. It is purely an administrative identifier used across tax, property, banking, and official processes.

Who needs a NIE number?

If you are a foreign national and you need to do almost anything official in Spain, you need an NIE number. Common reasons include:

Buying or renting property. Opening a Spanish bank account. Signing up with the Seguridad Social. Filing a Spanish tax return. Importing or purchasing a vehicle. Starting a business or registering as autónomo.

EU citizens who are also registering their residency will get their NIE number as part of that process. Non-EU citizens, including British and American nationals, typically apply for the NIE number separately via the EX-15 form before or alongside their residency application.

The EX-15 Form

The EX-15 is the form used to apply for a tax NIE only. It is the right form when you need an NIE number for a specific purpose such as a property purchase or a bank account, but you are not applying for EU residency at the same appointment.

Do not confuse the EX-15 with the EX-18. The EX-18 is the form EU citizens use when registering residency, which also assigns an NIE number but is a separate process entirely. Booking the wrong form is one of the most common reasons appointments are rejected.

What documents do you need?

You will generally need the following at your appointment:

Valid passport, plus a photocopy of the main data page. The completed EX-15 form. The pre-paid Modelo 790-012 tax fee receipt (approximately 10 to 12 euros, paid at a Spanish bank before your appointment). Documentation proving your reason for needing the NIE, such as a property contract, employer letter, or visa paperwork.

Missing the Modelo 790-012 is the single most common reason people are turned away on the day.

Where to apply

NIE number applications are processed at National Police stations (Comisaría de Policía Nacional) and at Spanish consulates abroad if you are applying before your move. You book an appointment online through the Cita Previa system. In major cities such as Madrid and Barcelona, slots can take three to six weeks to appear. Smaller provincial offices typically have shorter waiting times.

How long does it take?

In most offices, if you attend with all required documents, you receive your NIE certificate on the same day. Some offices issue it within a few working days. The number itself is permanent, though the physical certificate may need to be reissued if it is more than a few months old.
