Exchanging Your EU Driving Licence in Spain: Why Acting Early Makes Sense (2026)
As an EU citizen, you can drive in Spain on your home country licence for as long as it remains valid. That sounds simple enough, and for most people it is, at first. But once you register as a resident in Spain, your situation changes in ways that are easy to overlook. Those who wait too long can end up facing a serious problem at exactly the wrong moment.
When is the exchange compulsory?
For most EU driving licences, there is no immediate obligation to exchange after registering as a resident. Your licence stays valid. There are, however, two situations in which Spanish law requires the exchange within two years of registering your residency. The first is if your licence has no expiry date. The second is if its validity period is considered excessive by Spanish standards, which for a standard category B licence means valid for more than fifteen years. Many European countries issue licences with very long validity periods, so this applies more often than people expect.
In all other cases the Canje is voluntary. But voluntary does not mean it is wise to put off.

The scenario most people do not plan for
Imagine you have been living in Spain for a year or two, you are deregistered from your home country, and your driving licence is stolen or lost. What happens next?
You cannot go back to your home country's licensing authority for a replacement, because you are no longer registered there. You are entirely dependent on the DGT, Spain's traffic authority. But the DGT does not have your details in their system, because you never held a Spanish licence. That means they first have to verify internationally who you are and whether your licence was ever valid. That process takes time, and while it runs you are not legally allowed to drive. You have also lost an important piece of identification.
This is exactly the situation the Canje prevents. Exchanging your licence while you still have it in your hands eliminates this risk entirely.
How the process works
Since May 2025, the Canje for EU driving licences runs largely online through the DGT's Sede Electrónica. You submit a verification request digitally, after which the DGT contacts the licensing authority in your home country to confirm your licence is genuine and valid. Once that confirmation comes through, you receive an email with your personal Localizador number. With that number you book a cita previa at the DGT office in your province.
That in-person appointment is still required. You go once, hand in your original licence, and leave with a temporary Spanish paper licence. The definitive plastic card follows by post.
To submit the digital application you need a Certificado Digital or Cl@ve account. If you do not have one yet, this is a good moment to arrange it. You will need it for many other Spanish government services too.
Do not leave it too late
DGT appointments fill up quickly, and the verification process with your home country takes time. Anyone who waits until the situation becomes urgent will find themselves at the back of the queue. Start the Canje well in advance, not when your current licence is about to expire or something has already gone wrong.
