NIE vs TIE Spain: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need? (2026)

If you're moving to Spain, you'll come across two acronyms that cause more confusion than almost anything else in the expat process: NIE and TIE. People assume they're the same thing or that getting one means they don't need the other.

They're not the same. Here's the breakdown.

The NIE is a number, not a residency document

The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is a tax and identification number assigned to foreigners in Spain. You need it to buy property, open a bank account, sign contracts, and handle most official transactions.

What it does not do: give you the right to live in Spain. It is purely an identification number.

EU citizens: the Green NIE is your residency document

When EU citizens talk about "getting their NIE," they often mean the Green Certificate formally the Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión (CUE). This confirms you've registered as a resident in Spain. It happens to display your NIE number, which is where the confusion starts.

If you're an EU citizen living in Spain for more than 90 days, this is the document you need to register your residency.

Non-EU citizens (including UK post-Brexit): you need the TIE

The TIE 'Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero' is the biometric plastic residency card for non-EU nationals including British citizens since Brexit. It proves you have the legal right to live in Spain.

UK citizens: the old Green Certificate is no longer valid for you. If you're still using one, it does not confirm your current residency status and can cause problems with insurance, banking, and renewals.

You can have an NIE and still need a TIE

This is where a lot of people get tripped up. Your NIE number is issued as part of the TIE process but the number and the card are two different things. Having your NIE number does not mean your residency application is complete.
