Padrón / Volante de Empadronamiento
Summary

The padrón municipal is the official population register of every municipality in Spain. When you do your empadronamiento, your name and address are entered into this register. The documents you receive as proof are either a volante de empadronamiento or a certificado de empadronamiento.

Volante de empadronamiento

The volante is the standard extract from the padrón. It is issued immediately, often for free or for a small fee, and is accepted by most offices and institutions. It shows your name, NIE or passport number, address, and registration date. Most banks, the Seguridad Social, and utility companies accept a volante. It typically has no expiry date on the document itself, but many offices require it to be less than three months old.

Certificado de empadronamiento

The certificado is the formal, signed and sealed version. Some offices, particularly the Policía Nacional for residency applications and certain notarial procedures, specifically require a certificado rather than a volante. It may take a few working days to process and sometimes carries a higher fee. If an office asks for proof of empadronamiento, always confirm whether they need a volante or a certificado to avoid a wasted trip.

Certificado histórico

A certificado histórico de empadronamiento shows your full registration history in a municipality, including previous addresses. This is sometimes requested for long term residency applications or nationality applications to prove continuous residence over several years.

How long is it valid

Neither the volante nor the certificado has a fixed legal validity period. However, most government offices and banks require the document to be no older than three months. Some ask for one month. Always check the specific requirement of the office requesting it.
