Cita previa Spain 2026: why you can’t get an appointment and what to do about it

You’re trying to book a cita previa for your NIE, TIE or huellas and it just won’t work. The page loads slowly, throws an error or keeps showing the same message: „en este momento no hay citas disponibles.” You’re not imagining it. Through the summer of 2026, the appointment systems at extranjería and the Policía Nacional are under extraordinary pressure. Here’s what’s behind it and how to actually get a slot.

What’s behind it: the extraordinary regularization

On April 14, 2026, the Spanish Council of Ministers approved a Real Decreto opening an extraordinary regularization for people in situación irregular and asylum seekers who were in Spain before January 1, 2026. Applications run from April 16 through June 30, 2026. Estimates in Spanish media point to around 500,000 people who may be eligible.

This regularization is not for you. It’s aimed at undocumented people who were already in Spain before January 1, 2026. If you’re an EU citizen, British national or digital nomad, your process is different. But the pressure this puts on the offices and systems you rely on is very real.

Why this affects your appointment

The regularization applications run through a separate portal. So it’s not literally the same booking system. But the consequences hit you on three levels.

Same offices, same staff

Police union JUPOL raised the alarm before the decree even came into effect. The union warns that the unidades de Extranjería y Fronteras are already showing signs of overload, and that without additional staffing the situation could reach a full collapse. These are the exact same units that handle your NIE, TIE and huellas appointments.

500,000 extra TIE applications incoming

Anyone who receives approval must apply for a TIE at the Unidad de Documentación of the Policía Nacional within one month. That’s the very same counter where British nationals get their TIE and where everyone gives their huellas. If the government approves even a fraction of the expected applications, that means tens of thousands of additional TIE appointments passing through the same counters between now and the end of 2026.

Shared digital infrastructure

Part of the backend systems, including connections to registros, antecedentes penales checks and identity verification, is shared across processes. Heavier traffic on those systems translates to slower load times and timeouts on the cita previa pages you use as well.

What to expect in the coming weeks

Prepare for the following through the summer:

  • Longer load times on cita previa pages, especially during office hours

  • Error messages halfway through the booking process

  • The familiar „en este momento no hay citas disponibles” screen, even at offices that normally have availability

  • Appointments cancelled at the last minute due to staffing shortages

  • Longer processing times on pending applications

This is not the fault of the office you need to visit. It’s an effect across the entire system. Complaining at the counter won’t fix it. Patiently trying again will.

What you can do about it

You can’t remove the pressure, but you can work around it more effectively.

Try at different times of day

The cita previa system releases slots at various points throughout the day and week. Nothing available early morning? Try the early afternoon. No luck on Monday? Try Wednesday. People also abandon appointments, and when they do, those slots come back into the system. Checking regularly pays off.

Look beyond your nearest office

For some processes, like a standalone NIE, you can go to any oficina de extranjería in Spain. If Madrid is booked out, check Toledo, Guadalajara or Segovia. For processes tied to your province, like your green card, see if there are other Policía Nacional locations within your area.

Use your Certificado Digital

Many processes that normally require a physical appointment can be handled partly or fully online with a Certificado Digital. Think tax filings, accessing your Seguridad Social records, and registrations at the Agencia Tributaria. The more you handle online, the less dependent you are on scarce physical appointments. Don’t have a Certificado Digital yet? Our Digital Certificate module walks you through the application.

Prepare your appointment perfectly

Once you finally have a slot, you don’t want to come back because a document is missing or a form was filled in incorrectly. That means a wait of several more weeks. Our modules make sure you show up to every appointment with the right documents, correctly completed.
