E-Residence vs Easy To Spain: Which Is Right for You?
Search for help with your move to Spain and you'll quickly run into two very different options. On one side there's e-residence, a remote legal agency operating out of Portugal that promises to handle everything for you by Power of Attorney. On the other side there's Easy To Spain, a self guided platform built by a team who actually emigrated here in 2024 and now helps others do the same.
Both services exist to solve the same problem: the Spanish administrative maze. But they solve it in completely different ways, at very different prices, and with very different outcomes for you. This article walks through what each one actually does, what it really costs once all the fees are in, and who each one is genuinely suited for.
What Does E-Residence Actually Do?
E-residence is a Lisbon based legal agency offering remote assistance with Spanish and Portuguese administrative procedures. For Spain specifically, their headline product is getting you a NIE number without ever setting foot in the country. They also offer help with the NIE Verde (for EU residents), Seguridad Social registration, a Certificado Digital linked to their representation, Autónomo registration, company incorporation, and guidance on the Beckham Law.
The model is a classic done for you agency. You sign a Power of Attorney (Poder Notarial) authorizing their team to act in your name. They book the appointment in Spain, attend it on your behalf, file the forms (EX-15, Modelo 790), and send you the resulting document as a PDF by email or WhatsApp. You never visit Spain yourself, and you never speak directly to any Spanish authority.
For a very specific type of user, that convenience has genuine value. But there are three things worth understanding clearly before you commit.
The Real Cost of E-Residence
E-residence's processing fee for a single Spanish NIE sits in the region of €200, with higher tiers available for priority processing and physical delivery. That figure alone already tells you where we are on the price spectrum. But it is not the full bill.
Before they can act for you, you need a Power of Attorney, notarized in your home country, then legalized with an apostille stamp. A notary typically charges €50 or more for the document itself. The apostille adds another €25 to €50 depending on the country. If you want the original NIE certificate couriered to you rather than a PDF, shipping is a further add on.
By the time you've added everything up, a single NIE through e-residence commonly lands somewhere between €275 and €350. And all of that money buys you exactly one document.

What You Get Is Only Part of the Picture
E-residence handles the procedures that can legally be done by proxy, which is essentially the paperwork piece of your move. What they cannot do is everything else that comes after. Your empadronamiento has to be done by you in person at your town hall. Your TIE biometrics, if you are a non EU citizen, require your fingerprints in Spain. Your bank account onboarding, your tax residency declarations, your utility contracts, your encounters with the local Hacienda, your dealings with the DGT for your driving licence, none of that is covered.
The agency model works beautifully up to the airport. Past that point, you are on your own, and nothing about the process has taught you how any of it actually works.
You Hand Over Control via Power of Attorney
Signing a Poder Notarial is not a small thing. It authorizes a third party to act in your name with Spanish administrative bodies. Done properly with a reputable firm, it is perfectly safe. But it does mean you have no direct line to the Policía Nacional, the AEAT, or the Tesorería de la Seguridad Social about your own file. If something gets delayed, queried, or returned for a correction, you hear about it through the agency, and you depend on them to resolve it. That is fine when everything goes smoothly, which it usually does. It becomes considerably less fine when it doesn't.
What Does Easy To Spain Do?
Easy To Spain sits at the opposite end of the market. It is a self guided platform born out of our own emigration to Spain in 2024. Instead of acting on your behalf, it gives you the knowledge to act for yourself, correctly, with confidence, and on your own terms.
Each Easy To Spain module is a full walkthrough of one administrative procedure. You learn which form to use, which boxes to tick, what to bring, where to go, how to book your cita previa, and what to expect when you sit down at the desk. You attend the appointment. You hand in your paperwork. You walk out the same day with a stamp and a document that is indisputably yours.
The Price Difference Is Substantial
The Easy To Spain NIE module costs €29.95. No notary fees. No apostille. No courier charges. No tiered upsells. A full Easy To Spain journey covering your NIE, green card, Certificado Digital, Seguridad Social and Autónomo registration costs less than a single NIE application through e-residence.
If you are genuinely moving to Spain and will need more than one document, the difference is not small change. It is often the difference between one piece of paper handled and your entire first year in Spain mapped out.
You Actually Learn the System
Spain's administrative world has its own rhythms. The sede electrónica, the Modelo system, the AEAT portal, the way citas previas get released and snapped up within minutes, the division between your local Hacienda and the national one. The sooner you understand how it all works, the easier your life in Spain becomes.
People who go to their own appointments learn things a proxy client never picks up. They know which office handles what. They know the language of the forms. They know how to spot a mistake on a Modelo, who to call when something goes wrong, and how to fix a quirk in their own file without paying an agency fee. That knowledge compounds for every year you live here.
A Full Ecosystem of Modules
Moving to Spain is not a one document errand. Easy To Spain covers the full sequence:
NIE Number for EU citizens at €29.95
NIE Green Card (Certificado de Registro) at €29.95
TIE Card for non EU residents at €29.95
Certificado Digital at €4.99
Seguridad Social registration at €29.95
Autónomo registration via Modelo 036 and RETA at €59.95
Digital Nomad Visa guidance at €29.95
Driving Licence exchange at €19.95
E-residence covers a narrower slice of this list and charges a premium agency fee for each one. Easy To Spain covers the whole journey at a price that does not feel like a second rent payment.
Who Is Each Service For?
E-residence is genuinely useful for a narrow profile. If you are buying Spanish property from abroad, incorporating a company without relocating, or need a NIE purely for a one off financial transaction with no intention of actually living here, paying a premium to hand it all to a proxy makes sense. Your time is worth more than the fee. You do not need to learn the system because you will rarely use it.
Easy To Spain is built for a completely different person. If you are actually moving to Spain, with your partner, your kids, your pension, your business, or your remote job, you need much more than a single document. You need to understand the country you are now living in. You need to handle the next ten administrative moments without paying an agency fee for each one. You need confidence, not dependence. That is the person Easy To Spain is built for.
